- 4 cups Water
- 200 gr Papelón or panela
- 3 cups Precooked corn flour
- 1/2 cda Salt
- 2 cda Anise Seeds
The first step is to place the water in a saucepan and place over medium heat. Add the grated papelón so that it dissolves faster.
Wait a few minutes for the heat to dissolve the papelón, helping with a spoon and stirring slowly. Once the papelón is completely dissolved, remove from the heat and let stand.
Once the water has rested, add the salt, the anise seeds and little by little the flour, mix to remove the lumps.
Now we start kneading for about three minutes.
When we obtain a consistent, soft and non-sticky dough, we start to make the arepitas. Form small balls and shape them into arepas with both hands, using circular movements and pressing to flatten.
Place a pot over medium-high heat with plenty of oil to fry the sweet arepas.
In a short time the arepitas will begin to puff up, turn them over to cook on the other side until they are golden brown.
Remove the arepas and place them on absorbent paper to remove the excess oil and let them cool a little, not so much that they should be eaten hot.
Open and spread with butter and fill with grated white cheese or fresh cheese as in this case. Enjoy and bon appetit.
