Venezuelan Fried Arepa Recipe

This Venezuelan fried arepas recipe gives a different twist to traditional arepas. A delicious and easy to make appetizer or snack, made with fried cornmeal and filled with cheese, beans and your favorite fillings.
Fluffy on the inside, crunchy on the outside, they won't leave you wrong with your guests or become a family favorite.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 Tazas Water
  • 1/2 cda Salt
  • 4 Tazas Precooked corn flour
  • 2 cda Butter
  • 200 gramos Grated white cheese

Instructions
 

  • In a medium bowl in which you can knead comfortably, place the water and salt. Mix these ingredients. Then we add little by little the corn flour and stir to mix without forming lumps.
    After adding all the flour, we can let it rest for a few minutes so that the flour absorbs the water. We begin to knead.

  • Divide the dough into four equal portions. Form balls with each portion and flatten to make the arepa.
    A characteristic that distinguishes the Venezuelan fried arepa, is that a hole is made with the finger in the center of the arepa, whose purpose is that the oil can enter through it and the arepa is crispy in the center as well as on the edges.
  • Place a pot or deep frying pan with enough oil to cover the whole arepa, over medium-high heat. Place the arepas and cook for about 6 minutes per side.

  • Remove the arepas and place in a container with absorbent paper to remove excess oil.
  • Open the arepa and add butter to taste, then fill with grated white cheese.
