In Venezuela arepas are made in various ways, but the fillings are out of this world, a perfect example is the Arepa Rompe Colchón.
Each Venezuelan stuffs them in his own way and according to his possibilities, there are many types of stuffing and each one is "baptized" or given a very peculiar name, which is associated with the elements of the stuffing and the area of the country.
This arepa is considered an aphrodisiac because of its ingredients, mainly seafood, and was named Rompre Colchón because it is said to increase male potency. It is very typical of the Venezuelan coastal region and is enjoyed by locals and visiting tourists alike.

How to make Arepas Rompe Colchón?

Ingredients
Ingredients for the Rompe Colchón arepas dough
- 3 Tazas Water that is not cold
- 1/2 cda Salt
- 3 Tazas Precooked corn flour
Ingredients for Stuffing Preparation
- 250 gr Prawns
- 100 gr Squid tubes
- 100 gr Pepitonas
- 1/2 l Lemon Juice
- 1/2 cda Salt
- 1/2 Taza Tomato puree
- 50 gr Parsley
Instructions
Arepas Preparation
- We are going to make traditional Venezuelan arepas with corn flour. We put the water and salt in a container with a good capacity. We add the corn flour little by little and stir until everything is mixed and there are no lumps.
- We can let the mixture rest for a few minutes. Then we start to knead until we obtain a homogeneous, smooth and non-sticky dough. Divide the dough into equal parts and make balls.
- With both wet hands we make circular movements and press to flatten the dough, until the arepa is approximately one finger thick. Repeat the process with all the arepas.
- Preheat the griddle and grease it a little. Place the arepas for at least 4 or 5 minutes before turning. In total it takes about 6 or 7 minutes on both sides.
- Cover the arepas with a dry cloth to keep them warm and cool.
Preparation of the filling for ra arepa rompe colchón
- We prepare and clean the ingredients that require it. This preparation is cooked. Finely chop the squid into slices.
- Place a pot with enough water and add salt. Place the pepitonas, prawns and squid for about 5 minutes.
- Once cooked, remove the water and place in another dry container.
- We start adding the lemon juice, tomato sauce and chopped parsley. Mix everything well and leave it ready to fill the arepas.
- Open the arepas and fill each one with the prepared Rompe Colchón. Bon appetit.
